A Guided Tasting & Lecture with Abe Schoener of L.A. River Wine Company & Scholium Project.

Since 2019, Abe Schoener (previously of Scholium Project) has been working to uncover the remarkable and barely known historical vineyards of Southern California.

Schoener started out as a philosophy professor at St. John’s College in Maryland, where he caught the winemaking bug in the late 90’s. At the time, he could be considered a punk rocker, using eccentric methods and natural fermentations to make wines with little to no sulfur. This may not seem out of the ordinary now, but in the early 2000s it was revolutionary.

Now Schoener has turned his attention to a handful of vineyards planted before Prohibition in LA County’s Cucamonga Valley.

Before Prohibition, the center of winemaking in California was in Los Angeles—not Napa or Sonoma. Most of the vineyards from this time were replaced long ago by factories, warehouses, and freeways. But not all, and the next chapter of their story is just beginning...
